The core philosophy of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga courses taught at our yoga school in India is to inculcate the importance of shifting the focus from asanas to breath. This allows one to understand "formless consciousness" which means that postures are impermanent i.e. they come and go while the only permanent thing is constant focus on breath. In the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system, the body is used as a mantra. The postures i.e. asanas represent the beads and the 3 fundamental techniques i.e. Ujjayi Pranayama, Drishti and Bandhas form the string that holds the beads together to create a garland of yoga postures. The system is designed to work as a movement meditation(dhyana) where the transition from each posture to the next is as important as the posture itself. In this way the practice becomes deeply meditative. Once the fundamental techniques are mastered the practice will happen almost effortlessly else it will appear very hard.
